This week I started off with doing some pretty fun daily creates.
The first being: #tdc2207 “Your Brushroom” where I had to find an old kitchen tool and rename it. I chose the cheese grater because I have never used it without almost losing a finger or too and I feel like that has to be its real purpose: “finger shredder”.
The next daily create I chose was #tdc2206 where we had to tell a flash fiction story about the zombie apocalypse in a single tweet. Reading the “Twitter Fiction” article gave me some insight on how to be successful with this story.
I really enjoy doing the daily creates because it is a quick fun way to stay involved with other people in this course and see their creativity.
We also did a little learning from the article “Storytelling for the Twenty-First Century” where we dived into what digital storytelling is and what stories are and are not. I think this article will help me in this course when filtering through my creativity in our assignments.
Question of the Week: In the event of a zombie apocalypse, would you rather be turned into a zombie or have everyone you love turned into a zombie? Why?
I think I would rather be turned into a zombie… it would be so hard to lose everyone I love and knowing that they are a danger to me. There could be a possibility that I would have to kill someone I love to save myself and I am not sure I could ever do that. At least if I’m a zombie there is chance that I could still be with my family and loved ones.
The End Day apocalypse outlined a very realistic situation. It was a pretty all over the place kind of video but something a little more likely to happen as appose to a zombie apocalypse. They were based off of scientific or biological research. A volcano irruption, mega-tsunami, killer meteor, virus, and black hole are all very probable but I think the black hole is the most ridiculous situation. I would probably panic in these situations especially the mega tsunami situation because my home town is Virginia Beach, Virginia. This situation is the most frightening to me because my family would almost instantly lose everything and there would be very little chance for survival since we are at sea level.
The Routledge article had some really good information and examples pertaining to apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic science fiction. It was very popular in the 20th century and a very popular tool for artists to use to express themselves and their stance on current events. I think it is very true that this genre has captured such a vast following, mostly because it is so interesting. I think it feeds into our own fears of what might happen one day.
I chose to read the excerpt from “I Am Legend” and was genuinely interested and wanted to keep reading. I loved this movie and I look forward to finding differences and creating my own imagery from reading the book. I think the main character, Robert Neville, is not a character I would usually connect with, but the other does a really good job of capturing your interest and makes you want to root for him.
I’m an outdoor enthusiast, hiking, kayaking, hunting… you name it, and I probably enjoy doing it. Naturally when I heard they were reopening “Gander Mountain” as “Gander Outdoor” I was excited! Friends mentioned that the store would be having its grand opening on a Wednesday, so I planned to be there.
I had a busy week with getting back into the swing of things at school and was honestly a little stressed out so I thought, “What better timing to go do a little retail therapy?” and I left to head to the grand opening. I was excited and already planning out the sections I was going to look since the following weekend I would be going snow tubing! I needed a good pair of snow overalls and some warm, waterproof gloves.
I walked in and it was SO nice! I was very surprised there weren’t more cars in the parking lot or more people in the store but I figured maybe Wednesday was a hard day for people working to make it to the store. I began my search for some good snow apparel and found a few perfect items including gloves, socks, and a warm hat. An employee walked up to me and asked how I was doing and then I continued on my search thinking, “Wow! The customer service is great too!”
I was just about to try on some awesome snow overalls when another employee walked up to me and asked if I worked there… I was confused and said no… and THEN came the embarrassment. Keep in mind, I have been walking the store for about 45 minutes now shopping. The employee informed me that the stores grand opening wasn’t actually until the following day and that I would have to leave….
My face turned red and hot and placed down my finds and walked out with my tail between my legs. I guess through all the excitement I didn’t realize that I was the only customer and maybe the first door I tried was locked for a reason… LOL
But I did return the following day and get everything I needed for an awesome trip snow tubing!

It is time to start preparing for THE END! Join me on my journey throughout Digital Storytelling 106.
This week I went through DS106 bootcamp and became familiar with the several platforms we will be using to communicate with one another such as creating a Domain of One’s Own. I created this WordPress with the name “umwequestrianista” because I am student at Mary Washington and when I am not fulfilling my responsibilities as a student I am definitely at the barn riding my horse. I think it would be interesting throughout the semester to tie together my passion for horses to our apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic fiction topics.
I also became familiar with using “Slack”, which is basically our way of communicating as a class to ask and answer questions and share our hard work. I had never heard of this prior to our class, but I think it is a great tool to have since we aren’t physically meeting in a classroom.
The other platforms I created to help me become more successful in this course I am already pretty familiar with. I created an Instagram and Twitter account “umwequestrianista” to match my domain and also a YouTube and SoundCloud to work on things to post for our course.
What is your own personal relationship with apocalyptic or post apocalyptic fiction?
I have very little knowledge of this topic besides some movies I have seen in the past, so I am excited to dive a little deeper into it this semester. I have really enjoyed the movies “Mad Max Fury Road” and “I Am Legend” because they were extremely action packed and both had characters I was rooting for to make it out to the end.
I think that zombi apocalypse is my favorite genre. I have been obsessed with “The Walking Dead” for years now. It is interesting to think about putting myself in that situation and potentially having to see a loved one as zombie and choose my safety over the person who isn’t really a person anymore.
